Method 1: Preview (one or several photos)

  1. Open the HEIC photo in Preview.
  2. Choose File > Export.
  3. Set Format to JPEG and adjust the quality slider.
  4. Click Save.

To convert several files, open them all in Preview, select every thumbnail in the sidebar, then choose File > Export Selected Images and pick JPEG under Options.

Method 2: Finder Quick Action (fastest for batches)

  1. Select the HEIC files in Finder.
  2. Right-click and choose Quick Actions > Convert Image.
  3. Choose JPEG, an image size and whether to keep metadata, then click Convert to JPEG.

This option is available in macOS Monterey (12) and later.

Method 3: the Photos app

  1. Select the photos in Photos.
  2. Choose File > Export > Export [n] Photos.
  3. Set Photo Kind to JPEG, pick a quality and size, and click Export.

Dragging photos out of Photos onto the desktop exports them in their original format, which is usually HEIC, so use the Export menu instead.

Method 4: online, without any settings

The online HEIC to JPG converter works in Safari, Chrome and Firefox on a Mac, converts many photos at once and downloads them as a ZIP. Photos are processed locally and never uploaded.

Which method should I use?

For a single image, Preview is simple. For a folder of files, the Finder Quick Action is fastest. For photos inside your Photos library, use Photos' Export. For files you received from someone else, or when you are on a computer you don't control, use the browser.
